A Note From Your Recording Secretary

I started working for Madelia Light & Power in July 1986. I work in the utility office as an administrative specialist primarily with the accounting, billing and finance portion of the business. In 1992, we organized and became members of IBEW Local 160. A side note to our first negotiations: My employer hired a labor attorney from the cities to negotiate our first contract. Turns out his name was Tim Pawlenty, the now governor of our great state. It was the first and last contract he helped negotiated! Since that first contract, I'm proud to say that our negotiations have been solely done by Local 160 and management with great success. In May 1996, Madelia Light & Power received a Certificate of Honor Labor Management Award from the Union Label & Services Trades Department of the AFL-CIO. In the spring of 1999, I decided to run for recording secretary for the Local and with great support, I won the election in June. I am extremely proud to be the first elected woman officer for IBEW Local 160. I also serve as chief steward for the three units in Madelia. I've made it a personal goal of mine to become more active in women's issues. I am currently serving on the committee that is organizing the upcoming Midwest School for Women Workers, hosted by the University of Minnesota Labor Education Services. I will also be attending the IBEW Women's Conference in July, and I continue to attend luncheon meetings related to union women's issues.
